The Suburban Connection

From the Toronto Star: Suburbs waiting for a connection
"How can suburbs be transformed into genuine cities? How can urbanity be introduced into places where none exists?"
Calgary is a sprawling city and has come under some harsh criticism for this fragmentation. It's a challenge to involve the 'burbs with the arts and culture scene. It was good to see an event like Globalfest taking place in Forest Lawn. Projects like The Bridges, Garrison Woods, and the Urban Campus project show that the City is trying different development strategies which will change the way Calgarians interact within their environments, but much needs to be done to bridge the gap to Calgary's outlying residential areas.
The disconnection of the extremities of the city can be partially overcome through media and information but this still requires suburbanites to come to some other part of the city that is more friendly for cultural activity. Are there ways of taking it to the 'burbs? What role should the suburbs have in Calgary's arts and culture?
